Overview
Adapted from two legends of the Nyaneka people in southeastern Angola. Set during a time of famine, and with only two families surviving, the film charts the struggle of Nelisita, a young man who confronts the spirits with help from animals and his friends.

The Witches and the Grinnygog
An ancient church is being dismantled and moved to a new location, stone by stone. Soon after, four strangers show up in the village and the Sogood & Firkettle children seem to be the only ones who question the mysterious things that begin to happen. This film was originally broadcast across six 25 minute episodes with a total runtime of 150 minutes. A few years later, the US cable network Nickelodeon edited the miniseries into a 2 hour (including commercials) movie block. This 2 hour edited version was shown throughout the 1980s on US television.
Life is Fare
This beautiful film about the immigrant experience is a San Francisco film about Eritrea. Sephora Woldu plays "Sephora" who, like the director, is an architecture student but also a filmmaker. She is pitching to her traditional mother a film she wants to make about a man who fled their home country and ended up in San Francisco. As a recently arrived immigrant, he is terribly homesick for his native Eritrea, but will not admit it due to unease towards speaking ill of the country; and more consciously in hesitance of admitting hard truths about his culture and himself. "It’s colorful and visually whimsical in a way that can only be described as if the Wizard of Oz went to Africa," said Woldu.
Maria Ada
Maria Ada is a famous urban legend that tells the story of a teacher who died leaving two sons behind while his ghost occasionally comes to life trying to recover them. Oscar and Jose, two friends and former classmates, tell about the tragic ghost apparitions and their constant bickering with an albino boy. A friend from the same classroom could only see the ghost, because in Equatorial Guinea they say that albinos have four eyes.
The Water Will Carry Us Home
Through living ritual and stop motion animation, this short tells the story of stolen Africans who are thrown off a slave ship whilst sailing through the Middle Passage. Upon falling into the sea, the unimaginable happens when mermaids, who dwell in these waters, save their spirits.
